Monika Behrens - BIO

For the last 14 years I have been developing my practice within the realm of still life painting. Recently, I have had an increasing focus on the history of traditional Dutch still life painting, focusing on the genres compositional devices and how they can be applied to make new works in a contemporary way. My current work draws a dialogue between the histories of traditional Dutch seventeenth century still life with contemporary ways of making paintings.

In mid 2017 I had a significant solo exhibition at UNSW Galleries, this exhibition was the culmination of my PhD research titled Contemporary still life painting. Over the last 14 years I have had 10 solo exhibitions including; The Thinking Image at Martin Browne Contemporary, The Hunting Trophy at Verge,

Double Dutch at Breenspace, Standing Still at Gallerysmith, Salad Days at the National Art School Gallery, 1 Malaysia at Rimbun Dahan Gallery in Kuala Lumper and Silent Bang, Ivan Dougherty Gallery in Sydney. I have also exhibited in a number of prominent group exhibitions such as the Primavera and the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Archibald and Sulman prize at the Art Gallery of NSW, EEA21 at the Museum of Modern Art in Saitama Japan, and the Helen Lempriere Travelling Art Scholarship at Artspace, Sydney. I have also received two Australia Council for the arts grants and been on several

local and international residencies including; Artspace Sydney, Rimbun Dahan Malaysia, Cite des arts International Paris and Performance Art

Forum (PAF) St Erme.
